Johannes

Johannes Machinya holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand. Currently, he is a lecturer of Health Sociology at the same university. His research interests are in the interdisciplinary field of critical digital health sociology, situated at the intersection of science and technology studies (STS) and health sociology. Within this interdisciplinary domain, Machinya is particularly interested in exploring the implications of digital health technologies, artificial intelligence, and algorithms on human rights. He also examines processes of datafication and digital surveillance and their impact on data privacy and security. Furthermore, he directs his attention to the governance challenges surrounding emerging health technologies within the African context.
